One of my fellow writers lovingly stated on Twitter that he looked forward to receiving these weekly newsletters in the same way he anticipated one of his favorite TV shows. Be still my heart! When I started this series I knew it would be a bit on the longer side. It’s a complicated story and the subject is too important to dilute. Still, I hoped that even though it was long, receiving it in pieces would feel like watching a weekly network show you enjoyed. So when a writer homie said that’s exactly what it felt like I almost melted. In that same vein consider this post a commercial break. I wanted to give you a heads up about what to expect next on the B-Side, so here we go!
1) Part 10 is the last episode of the “Beyond Bars” series. Yup, it’s the series finale if you will :-)
2) When we return in June expect a shift in direction. It’s about to be a hot readers summer ( I swear one day my pre-teen child will read that line and call me lame for 5011 hours straight but I don’t care. I gotta give her something to write about in her memoir.) Anyway, there are a few amazing books out that are perfect to center in a newsletter dedicated to amplifying voices typically relegated to the B-Side of conversations. I won’t spoil the surprise but I will give you a major hint. The first book is written by a Black woman, who is known for her “Trap Feminism.” Stay tuned for that reveal and my thoughts on her book. The goal is to support brilliant work and hopefully generate more conversations about the important subjects. Especially since the books that will be featured are in line with the content covered here at the B-Side. This brings me to my next point…
3) Conversations! I want us to engage more. I love when those of you who know me personally text me your thoughts about the newsletter. I also appreciate it when some of you DM me or post your thoughts on Twitter ( please, by all means continue to share the content on social media) but I would love us to have more community convos. So post your thought in the comment section. When and if you share it on social media continue to tag me or @ me and I will do my best to engage there too. Your thoughts are important to me. Which brings me to my last point of this commercial (I’m really running with that one comment about this feeling like a TV show lol.)
4) I want your suggestions for topics. If we are going to have more community conversations the books and future topics covered should reflect your interest. If there is a book you want me to cover/review let me know in the comment section of this specific post. If you are tossing and turning and unable to sleep because you are up all night wondering about my thoughts on a specific topic just text me. Ok, I’m sorta joking but not really. Don’t text me, but please let me know via the comment section of this post if there is a particular issue you want to see featured here. I don’t typically write hot takes unless I feel super compelled like I did when I wrote this piece in response to Kanye West going full Kanye West and the world decided this is a “problem” Black women should fix.” But Anyway, Holla at ya girl tho.
